Summary

Climate Analytics and the RCC Caribbean, hosted a regional peer-to-peer exchange at the recently concluded Caribbean Electric Mobility Forum. The event explored how quality data systems can enable ambitious and credible NDC targets in the transport sector. Participants from across the Caribbean shared lessons on collecting and using data such as vehicle fleet composition, mileage, EV performance, and fuel consumption. The session highlighted ongoing initiatives in countries like Belize and Antigua and Barbuda to collect geo-tracking and battery data for electric buses and compare with diesel vehicles for cost-benefit analysis.

Participants also discussed coordination challenges and data gaps and identified regional collaboration as key to overcoming them. Interest was expressed in developing a regional transport data platform, sharing proxy data, and engaging in peer review mechanisms to improve the quality and usability of national data.

Objectives

  • Emphasize the critical role of data in supporting the transport sector’s contribution to nationally determined contributions (NDCs).
  • Share examples of effective data management systems and their application in the region.
  • Facilitate peer learning by encouraging participants to share experiences, challenges, and solutions for transport data collection and utilization.

Key Outcomes

  • Transport sector data is central to setting NDC targets and improving implementation planning and support for systematic data collection should be included as a condition for expanding sectoral coverage in future NDCs.
  • Several countries in the region are collecting real-time EV bus data that could inform regional practice and are providing valuable opportunity to collect data on mileage, frequent travel routes, and bus usage.
  • Regional data platforms and collaboration mechanisms (e.g., through CCREEE CEKH) could provide shared infrastructure and strengthen transparency and could also support data-intensive processes such as the development of GCF concept notes and funding proposals.
  • Regional proxy data can help fill gaps where national data is unavailable, especially in sectors where emissions profiles are similar across islands.
  • Peer data checks across countries can help identify anomalies or outliers, improving the reliability and comparability of emissions models — particularly useful in sectors like waste and cooling.
