Pluvia - Mexico

This activity is generating energy and dealing with water shortages with rainwater harvesting.

Fast facts:

  • So far, this activity has directly benefited 54 families;

  • This activity’s ecological projects have assisted an average of 150 families.

The problem

According to the National Water Program, 35 million people suffer from water shortages in Mexico. In addition, three million people live without electricity in their homes, 85% of which live in rural areas. Even the most low-income families are charged for water services and often, service does not arrive.

The solution

Pluvia is dedicated to finding a solution to water shortages, through research, design and implementation of simple kits that can capture rainwater. Rainwater is first collected in a container that features a vertical garden. The rainwater filters through, being cleaned by the plants. The water is then directed to a cistern that filters out the water. Households can also place a small device, designed by Pluvia, on their rainwater harvesting kits to generate electricity. The water pressure from the rain spins a micro turbine to generate energy and store it in batteries.

Helping the planet

Pluvia is sustainable because families can store their own water, generate electricity in poorer communities and also include kitchen gardens in the containers.

Helping people

Through the implementation and use of Pluvia’s products, communities can become self-sufficient in water, electricity and even food.

Scaling Up

Pluvia’s kit is easy to install and maintain. It can be easily replicated and scaled out to different communities, increasing the impact.
