Continuous Planting of Trees is stimulating community participation in environmental conservation efforts. Forest cover has been lost to deforestation and degradation, so this activity is motivating every household in the community to plant five trees per year. Trees bring cooler temperatures and can contribute to increased rainfall.
Fast facts:
The problem
Many trees in Uganda have been cut down, prolonging drought and food insecurity.
The solution
This activity, implemented by the Women’s Mission for Children, has invested USD 40,000 into agroforestry activities in the Wakiso District of Uganda on a 30 hectare piece of land as a long term investment. The activity aims to plant 10,000 trees. The government buys trees at approximately USD 87 per tree, so future returns from these plantation forests could be in the range of more than USD 1 million in 10-15 years’ time when timber will be supplied to the market
Helping the planet
This activity hopes to conserve trees and at the same time earn money for more conservation projects.
Helping people
Women have been directly involved in this activity. Most leadership positions are filled by women and they are being trained in forestry conservation, agricultural commercialization and marketing. Women are also planting trees on their household farms, and making charcoal from any felled trees.
Scaling Up
In about 10-15 years, this activity hopes to supply timber to the market and continue to engage in conservation activities.
