Marrakech Partnership at COP 25

With the Katowice Climate Package adopted at COP 24, we have entered a new era of ambition and action where the focus needs to be on driving systems’ change across the environmental, economic and social dimensions in order to collectively strive for limiting warming to 1.5 °C and a climate neutral and resilient world. The global climate action agenda needs to show what the future needs to be in order to collectively achieve these aims and how all stakeholders are working together in the pre-2020 period to move towards this future. With this being a year of ambition building through a series of engagements, in particular the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit, it is critical to ensure coherence and continuity, that the action on the ground feeds into the UNFCCC process and to identify ways on how the UNFCCC process can catalyze even further action and ambition by all stakeholders in the final months of the pre-2020 period. At COP 25, it will be important to define what ambition and the transition towards a 1.5°C climate neutral and resilient world means for the thematic and crosscutting areas of the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action. These pathways need to be ambitious but also realistic and science-based. As such, they need to be accompanied with the concrete and collaborative actions, initiatives and solutions between policymakers and other stakeholders that are transformational, scalable and cross-cutting in order to accelerate this transition. A method to also track progress against these aims is critical to provide evidence and demonstrate that the transformation is possible and that ambitious climate action is happening now.

With this in mind, the Marrakech Partnership, under the guidance of the High-Level Champions, will convene a series of events during COP 25 in Madrid, Spain during December 2019. The events aim to foster dialogue on actionable and collaborative solutions that are based on scientific evidence, and that allow policymakers and other stakeholders to work hand-in-hand. The concept notes, programmes and the outcome documents will be posted on this page as they become available.
