Education, Public Awareness and Children & Youth: Turning Climate Science into Climate Action

Mandate: Decision 18/CP.26 and Decision 22/CMA.3 invite Presidencies, with the support of the secretariat, to convene an in-session event at each session of the COP and CMA on a thematic area relevant to the Convention and the Paris Agreement, to promote coherence and strengthen coordination of work on Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) undertaken by constituted bodies, United Nations entities and other United Nations processes.   Background: Climate action should be based on the basis of the best available scientific knowledge. However, for science to shape decisions and drive action, it must reach people, communities and societies. This applies across all walks of life and at every stage of life, and especially to children and young people, who will live longest with the consequences of today's decisions and who are agents of change.   The event will explore ACE -education and public awareness, training, public access to information, public participation, and international cooperation- as a toolbox for turning climate science into climate action, focusing on how education and public awareness can deepen public understanding and engagement in climate science, particularly among children and youth. It will also highlight practical examples and opportunities for international cooperation on climate education and public awareness.   Outcome: The proceedings of the event will be incorporated into the annual summary report, prepared by the secretariat, on progress in implementing activities under the Glasgow work programme on ACE for consideration by the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI).   Agenda: TIME DETAILS 15:00-15:20 Opening of the Event 15:20-15:45 Panel Presentations: Education and Public Awareness: Empowering Children and Youth for Climate Action  15:45-17:00 World Café: Turning Climate Science to Climate Action through Education, Public Awareness and Youth Engagement       Theme Station 1 Public participation in climate science Station 2 Feeding climate science into policy Station 3 Unpacking climate science for the public   17:00-17:20 Report Back 17:20-17:45 Panel Discussion: Climate Science, Education, Children & Youth 17:45-18:00 Closing of the Event   Further details coming soon For further information please contact ace@unfccc.int
