Monday, 16 November 2026 | 13:30-14:20 | COP 31 Special Event Room 5

Background

Hosted by the Technology Executive Committee (TEC) and the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism AI for Climate Action Award aims to identify and promote local innovation by recognizing open-source AI solutions that support climate change mitigation and adaptation in developing countries.

This event will showcase the winning solution of the AI for Climate Action Award 2026 and celebrate the winner through an award ceremony.

Alongside celebrating local innovation through the Award ceremony, the side event will launch the TEC knowledge product and share practical approaches to support the implementation and scaling up of AI solutions. This year, the TEC has developed a knowledge product on practical means to support AI implementation for transformative climate solutions. Drawing on case studies and stakeholder experiences, the publication provides practical guidance for policymakers, local innovators and support providers on overcoming implementation barriers and supporting the deployment and scaling up of AI solutions in developing countries.

Objectives

  • Recognize the importance of AI innovation that leads to actual implementation;
  • Commend the AI for Climate Action Award 2026 winner and the achievements of the winning team;
  • Encourage exchange and partnerships to support the implementation and wider deployment of locally led AI solutions;
  • Launch and disseminate the TEC knowledge product on practical means to support AI implementation for transformative climate solutions.
