Background

The UNFCCC Technology Mechanism Initiative on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Climate Action (#AI4ClimateAction) explores the potential role of AI as a powerful technological tool for transformative adaptation and mitigation solutions in developing countries, particularly in least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS). The UNFCCC Technology Mechanism is comprised of a policy arm, the Technology Executive Committee (TEC) hosted by UNFCCC and an implementation arm, the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) hosted by UNEP. This event is organized in collaboration with the COP 28 Presidency of the United Arab Emirates.

Objectives

The objectives of this high-level event are to provide a space for policy discussion, awareness raising, and exchange of knowledge and experience among stakeholders on opportunities and challenges of climate solutions powered by AI. The event will discuss various aspects of the application of AI for climate action to help accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement.  

Format

The event will feature high-level remarks, showcases of AI-powered adaptation and mitigation solutions, a presentation by the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism on the #AI4ClimateAction initiative, and the launch of the AI Innovation Grand Challenge.
