Mandate

The Nairobi work programme (NWP) is mandated to advance knowledge-based, inclusive, and action-oriented work on climate adaptation, including by engaging experts from diverse knowledge holders and by identifying practical options to support implementation of adaptation (see FCCC/SBSTA/2025/4 and FCCC/SBSTA/2022/6).

It is further mandated to organize global and regional in-person events, in combination with virtual engagement, ensuring regional balance and meaningful participation of knowledge users and NWP partners (see FCCC/SBSTA/2021/3 and FCCC/SBSTA/2023/4).

Hosting this event during the first 2026 climate week in Yeosu, South Korea serves these three strategic purposes:

  1. Positioning adaptation finance within an implementation-focused platform that convenes governments, financial institutions, private sector actors, and other key stakeholders
  2. Building on the 2025 foresight-driven co-creative process, moving from idea generation towards partnership-building and practical uptake
  3. Aligning the work with the 2026 climate week objectives, ensuring coherence with discussions on resilience, country-driven implementation and investment

Context

In 2025, the NWP convened a diverse group of knowledge holders and experts through three virtual meetings and an in-person session at the Addis Climate Week.  This forward-looking and inclusive process brought together actors from different knowledge systems and sectors to explore novel, practical and non-conventional options for financing adaptation finance between now and 2040 (see informal summary report).

This event represents the next step in that process, shifting from concept development to refinement, prioritization and possible practical applications for countries and organizations to apply and/or test.

Objective

To convene diverse knowledge holders and adaptation finance actors to refine and prioritize practical, non-conventional and forward-looking finance options identified in 2025, and to explore pathways for country-driven application and experimentation.

Participants

Representatives from governments, financial institutions, private sector, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, academic and scientific institutions, and underrepresented groups and voices.
