Objectives
The third expert group meeting on the ocean will provide an opportunity to discuss long-term strategies with following objectives:

  • Take stock of the achievements, progress and learning based on the collaboration to-date with the NWP expert group on the ocean
  • Confirm ongoing engagement of the NWP expert group on the ocean
  • Discuss vision and long -term collaborative actions

 Expected Outcomes
Strengthened vision for the NWP expert group on the ocean (2021-2024) and next steps.

What is the role of the Nairobi Work Programme and the NWP expert group on the oceans?
The UNFCCC knowledge-to-action hub on adaptation and resilience, the NWP connects constituted bodies, institutional arrangements and non-Party stakeholders. The NWP curates, produces and communicates knowledge. The NWP convenes partnerships for closing knowledge gaps on all aspects of climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation.

The SBSTA mandated NWP to prioritize the theme of oceans, coastal areas and ecosystems, including mega deltas, coral reefs and mangroves . In partnership with the NWP expert group on the ocean, the secretariat has co-designed and implemented actions particularly in support of specific knowledge needs for LDCs and SIDS, while also collaborating with the constituted bodies under the UNFCCC process.

The NWP expert group on the ocean has worked together since 2019 to find synergies to strengthen adaptation knowledge networks and address some of the challenges. The collaborative actions under the NWP have demonstrated how the NWP has served as a useful bridge between the expert group, constituted bodies and Parties. The expert group has illustrated how existing efforts under the UNFCCC are already addressing ocean-adaptation issues.
