This Sunday: Peoples Climate March
19 September 2014
Initiative

This weekend, hundreds of thousands of people will take to the streets of New York, London, Paris, and countless other cities and towns worldwide to demand ambitious action from world leaders gathering in New York for the UN Climate Summit on September 23.

350.org, the organizer of the Peoples Climate March, notes that over 2000 events are planned in 150 countries with event locations ranging from Delhi to rural Papua New Guinea.

In Tanzania, the Maasai are marching in a call for action to protect their homelands in the Serengeti, and on the border between Vancouver and Seattle thousands will link hands to show that climate change knows no borders. It’s not just environmental groups joining the march; labour unions, faith groups, and community organizations have all added their voices to the campaign.

On Wednesday, Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki Moon, announced that he will join the public march and “link arms with those marching for climate action.” He will be joined, among many others, by Executive Secretary General to the UNFCCC, Christiana Figueres, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Other supporters of the March that have not yet confirmed attendance include social rights activist Desmond Tutu, footballer Lionel Messi, and actors Natalie Portman, Jared Leto, and Brad Pitt.
