Founded at COP21 and hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme, the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) is an international initiative focused on:

  1.  Raising ambitions to meet the Paris climate goals: While the sector is a major emitter, it also holds huge potential for improvement. We work to raise ambition levels regarding retrofitting existing buildings and future-proofing investments going into new buildings through our work on: ambitious buildings and construction sector actions in NDCs; through keeping the buildings and construction sector under review; and through forging regional pathways towards a zero-emission, efficient and rewww.globalabc.org silient buildings and construction sector.
  2. Mobilizing all actors along the value chain: Faced with a fragmented value chain, all stakeholders – from design to construction, operations and demolition in the private and public sectors – need to play their part. The GlobalABC encourages policy frameworks that promote uptake of cost-effective solutions and private sector innovation.

Catalysed by the GlobalABC and co-led by the German Development Corporation (GIZ), the French Development Agency (AFD), and the French Energy and Environmental Management Agency (ADEME), the Program for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB), works with its five first partner countries Mexico, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia and Vietnam to significantly transform the buildings sector by promoting sustainable building design and construction. The aim is to lower energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions to a minimum level.

PEEB combines financing for energy efficiency in large-scale projects with technical assistance. It supports partner countries to improve their policies and standards, fosters expertise among professionals in the private and public sector and mobilises innovative financing solutions for large building projects. PEEB supports the development of ambitious building energy codes that include improved building envelopes, as well as minimum energy performance standards (MEPS).

With 123 members, including 29 countries, the GlobalABC is the leading global platform for governments, the private sector, civil society and intergovernmental and international organizations to increase action towards a zero-emission, efficient and resilient buildings and construction sector.

The GlobalABC’s five Work Areas focus on education and awareness, public policies, market transformation, finance and building measurement, and data and information. Bringing together key national stakeholders to jointly transform the buildings and construction sector, the GlobalABC has sparked four national alliances for increased stakeholder coordination on climate action in France, Morocco, Mexico and Tunisia.

GlobalABC works collaboratively with its members, particularly country members, on its products and activities which include:

  • The Global Status Report, which keeps track of annual progress and highlights good practice examples;
  • The Global Roadmap, which forges pathways towards a zero-emission, efficient and resilient buildings and construction sector. This is now being expanded upon four major regions (Africa, Asia and Latin America), with and through regional members;
  • The Guide on Incorporating Buildings Sector Climate Actions in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)
  • GlobalABC Regional Roundtables fostering matchmaking and best-practice exchange in respective regions.

The GlobalABC engaged at the recent UNSG Summit through the Energy Track (Cool Coalition - buildings keep cool naturally) and the Infrastructure, cities and Local Action (ICLA) track (zero carbon buildings).
