The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) announced the discovery of 30 new types of beans. These smart beans would fight against hunger and climate change, because they may be able to handle a worst-case scenario where the build-up of greenhouse gases causes the world to heat up by an average of 4 degrees Celsius. The crop is a vital foundation of food security for more than 400 million people in the developing world. For this reason the new beans are also called 'meat of the poor' for the affordable protein they provide.
