Introduction

The UNFCCC Secretariat will organize a two-day workshop as part of the Climate Week, which will explore the how to catalyze the role of carbon markets – especially under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement – in unlocking climate finance and accelerating Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) implementation across Africa.

Bringing together governments, private sector, regional and multilateral organizations, and technical experts, the event will blend information sessions, interactive discussions, and peer learning. The workshops will be designed to build foundational knowledge, share regional experiences, and chart practical pathways for scaling up investment and participation in high-integrity carbon markets.

This workshop is designed to be Africa-focused and action-oriented—building readiness, unlocking finance, and accelerating NDC implementation through high-integrity carbon markets.

Specific Objectives
  1. Examine the current state of climate and development finance in Africa, identifying gaps and opportunities for leveraging carbon markets.
  2. Explore how African countries are embedding carbon markets and pricing into their NDCs, and what institutional frameworks are emerging.
  3. Build a shared understanding of carbon market mechanisms, particularly the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism.
  4. Highlight case studies of African countries that have undertaken carbon market transactions, and the institutional innovations enabling them.
  5. Facilitate experience sharing between countries, regional bodies, and multilateral organizations to accelerate learning and action.
