Organizers

The United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security in collaboration with Munich Climate Insurance Initiative

Background

UNU-EHS carries out research in two main areas, Risk and Adaptation and Transformation, and conducts educational activities. Along with its research mandate, UNU-EHS is actively engaged in education and capacity building. It offers the joint Master of Science degree programme “Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security” with the University of Bonn. UNU-EHS also hosts a number of international PhD projects and capacity-development courses on global issues of environmental risks and sustainable development. The proposed session would be organized by the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII), which is hosted at UNU-EHS. As a leading think tank on climate change and insurance, MCII is dedicated to enabling capacity building and developing solutions to combat the risks posed by climate change for frontline communities in developing countries. Private sector engagement and capacity building are thus at the heart of UNU-EHS-MCII’s projects; the proposed session therefore fits into this framework.

Objectives

Raise participants’ awareness of risk transfer mechanisms and of the challenges encountered when implementing them.
