Gender and Environment Data Alliance (IUCN, WEDO, UN Women, UNFCCC) alongside the COP28 UAE Presidency

Background

This workshop is led by the Gender and Environment Data Alliance (GEDA) members’ IUCN, UNFCCC, UN Women and WEDO, alongside the COP28 UAE Presidency; organizers of the COP28 Global Conference on Gender and Environment Data. It will also engage other GEDA members to co-organize the session. This workshop builds on the Global Conference on Gender and Environment Data’s Call to Action and the first Global Stocktake outcomes and focuses on enhancing gender-responsiveness and gender-environment data in the upcoming Biennial Transparency Reports, and updating of Nationally Determined Contributions. The event harnesses the expertise of GEDA members and other partners to accelerate the use and uptake of gender and environment data for more gender-responsive NDCs and BTRs.

Objectives

  • Deepen understanding of gender-environment data and tools: Elevate participant’s expertise in current gender-environment data and tools essential for formulating and implementing gender-responsive Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

  • Facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building: Create a dynamic session for participants to share knowledge, experiences and best practices, strengthening each other’s knowledge and capacity to effectively utilize gender-focused tools for the development of NDCs and the monitoring and reporting of their implementation in Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs), thereby promoting greater accountability.

  • Develop a summary document: Produce a detailed synthesis of key discussions and insights from the event, aimed at informing and enhancing future approaches to accountability and transparency in gender-responsive climate commitments and actions.
