Overview:

This event will present and discuss key results of a recent meeting of the NAP Technical Working Group, convened by the LDC Expert Group (LEG), on how to advance the implementation of NAPs. Based on the key issues, participants will discuss how the issues can be further developed and used to facilitate the implementation of NAPs. A key departure from this discussion is the focus on solutions to successful implementation, and not on challenges.

The issues include:

  • Given the way the NAP is developed and captures priority activities for adaptation for a country, how implement it holistically as a programme upon submission? How could this be done?
  • Implementation of adaptation is a process, in much the same way that formulating a NAP is a process with elements and steps. What could be the building of implementation of adaptation and NAPs in particular, and how could these be supported by technical guidelines and support?
  • Multiple sources of funding
  • Be guided by targets, so can be usefully supported by appropriate M&E
  • Efforts to support countries turn priorities into bankable projects targeting main sources of climate financing are a good practice that will help LDCs and others overcome access challenges
  • Experience with adaptation for over 20 years through NAPAs and then 10 years with NAPs, and related activities, specific systems and themes are emerging as essential for each country.
  • For some of these, targeted funding support is being made available under the FM funds, and also guidance is being developed for best practice design and implementation.
