Background

The 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (2019 Refinement) was prepared by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) in accordance with the decision taken at the 44^th Session of IPCC in Bangkok, Thailand, in October 2016. The 2019 Refinement was adopted and accepted at the 49th Session of the IPCC in May 2019.

The refinement of the 2006 IPCC Guidelines was developed in order to provide an updated and sound scientific basis for supporting the preparation and continuous improvement of national greenhouse gas inventories of emissions by sources and removals by sinks, taking into account scientific and other technical advances that had matured sufficiently since 2006.

The 2019 Refinement has built upon the work of the previous IPCC GHG inventory guidelines as well as on inventory experts’ experiences in using the IPCC inventory guidelines and the contribution of over 280 experts worldwide.

Details

The event will be open to Parties and observers, and will be skype broadcasted. The objective of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) - IPCC special event is to enable Parties and other interested participants or stakeholders to receive a technical briefing from the IPCC on the content of the 2019 Refinement. Information on the overview chapter and each chapter of the 2019 Refinement, highlighting major refinements, will be presented by the Technical Support Unit of the IPCC TFI (IPCC TFI TSU).

The outcomes of the workshop are expected to help Parties and other interested participants or stakeholders in advancing the consideration of methodological issues related to the preparation and submission of national greenhouse gas inventories.
