Background: Since the adoption of the Warsaw Framework for REDD+ in 2013, countries have made steady progress in implementing REDD+ activities and establishing the key elements required to access results-based finance. These elements include, inter alia, national strategies or action plans (NS/AP) and safeguards information systems (SIS). NS/AP play a central role in guiding REDD+ implementation at the national level, including identifying drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, coordinating policies and measures, and strengthening governance arrangements for implementation. At the same time, the UNFCCC safeguards, also commonly referred to as the Cancun Safeguards and the preparation of SIS ensure that REDD+ activities are implemented in a manner that promotes environmental integrity, transparency, and the participation of relevant stakeholders.

Many countries have developed these elements and submitted related information to the REDD+ Web Platform, which creates a pool of experience from which practical, consolidated guidance can be extracted to support countries in strengthening their national strategies and safeguards systems. In response, the UNFCCC secretariat developed practice-oriented outreach materials on REDD+ national strategies/action plans and safeguards information systems.

Building on these materials, the secretariat will organize a webinar under the REDD+ Community of Practice to present the outreach materials developed on REDD+ national strategies/action plans and safeguards information systems. The webinar will introduce the key messages, structure and practical guidance contained in these materials, with a view to supporting Parties and stakeholders in understanding and making use of the resources.

Objectives: This webinar aims to:

  • Present the outreach materials developed on REDD+ national strategies/action plans and safeguards information systems, including their structure, key messages and practical guidance;
  • Enhance understanding of how these materials can support countries in strengthening their NS/AP and SIS in line with relevant UNFCCC decisions under the Warsaw Framework for REDD+;
  • Highlight selected good practices and lessons learned reflected in the materials, drawing on country experiences available on the REDD+ Web Platform;
  • Provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions and exchange views on the use of the materials.

Impact and outcomes of the event: The webinar will raise awareness among REDD+ stakeholders of the outreach materials developed on national strategies/action plans and safeguards information systems, and support their use as practical resources for strengthening REDD+ implementation.

By disseminating the key messages and practical guidance contained in the materials, the event will support developing country Parties in improving the design and implementation of national REDD+ frameworks, including the integration of safeguards and the development of robust national strategies. The webinar will also encourage participants to make use of the REDD+ Web Platform as a source of information and practical examples.

Target audience:

  • National focal points and technical experts from developing country Parties implementing REDD+;
  • Users of the REDD+ Web Platform;
  • Representatives of international organizations and development partners supporting REDD+ implementation;
  • Technical experts and practitioners working on forest governance, safeguards and REDD+ strategies;
  • Other relevant stakeholders, including civil society organizations and academia.
