Introduction

The Nairobi Work Programme (NWP), UNFCCC knowledge-to-action hub on adaptation and resilience and its partners help support countries in meeting their adaptation priorities, including formulating and implementing National Adaptation Plans.

At COP27 this year, the NWP’s 15th Focal Point Forum will provide an interactive space that contributes to scaling up adaptation action through knowledge. The forum will foster dialogue and knowledge-sharing among Parties, UNFCCC national focal points, NWP thematic expert groups and partners, and UNFCCC constituted bodies. The forum will launch the thematic area on agriculture and food security. It will be organized in engagement with the NWP thematic expert group on the same theme, also drawing in experts from across other NWP thematic areas and initiatives which focus on ramping up adaptation efforts at national and subregional levels through knowledge.

Objectives

  • Enhance country- and region-specific actions by highlighting adaptation knowledge and partnerships across all subregions
  • Provide practical and relevant knowledge on specific adaptation practices with Parties and those responsible for implementing adaptation action at the subnational and national level
  • Strengthen ties among communities of practice in order to enhance adaptation action through knowledge.

Background

To address knowledge needs of Parties, the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) mandated the NWP to prioritize the thematic areas of agriculture and food security. In September 2022, the NWP agriculture and food security thematic expert group convened to collect inputs on critical knowledge gaps that hinder the scaling of adaptation action in regions and countries. This event will continue to build on the discussions and knowledge shared.

Target audience: Parties, UNFCCC national focal points, experts on agriculture and food security, other thematic experts, NWP partners, development partners, the private sector, UNFCCC constituted bodies and UNFCCC observers.
