Background

Countries across the Middle East and North Africa are moving from the formulation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) towards implementation. This transition requires governments and their partners to translate climate targets into investable projects, operationalize sectoral mitigation and adaptation measures, strengthen transparency systems and mobilize the finance and partnerships needed to address capacity gaps.

Organized under the theme From Vision to Implementation: Leading Climate Action, Oman Climate Week 2026 provides an opportunity to take stock of regional progress and explore how countries are turning their NDC commitments into action.

As part of Oman Climate Week, the UN Climate Change Regional Collaboration Centre for the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (RCC MENA and SA), in collaboration with Oman Climate Week, is organizing a side event focused on NDC implementation in the MENA region. The event will bring together representatives of governments, regional organizations, development partners, the private sector and civil society to exchange experiences and highlight practical approaches from across the region.

Objectives

The event aims to:

• Facilitate regional exchange on experiences and lessons from NDC implementation in the MENA region.
• Identify common challenges related to access to finance, institutional coordination, implementation capacity and the integration of climate action across sectors.
• Highlight practical approaches countries and regional partners are using to move from planning to delivery.
• Showcase Oman’s national approach to NDC implementation as a case study for peer learning and potential partner support.

Expected outcomes

The event is expected to:

• Strengthen the exchange of practical knowledge on NDC implementation across the MENA region.
• Increase understanding of shared implementation challenges and potential solutions.
• Highlight good practices and opportunities for collaboration and partner support.
• Provide insights from Oman’s experience that may inform implementation efforts in other countries.
