Background

Gender-sensitivity is a key guiding principle for adaptation actions as contained in Article 7, paragraph 5, of the Paris Agreement and relevant decisions of the Conference of the Parties (e.g. decisions 28/CP.7, 1/CP.16, 5/CP.17, etc.).

The AC and the LEG, within their respective mandates and work plans carry out a variety of activities aimed at strengthening gender sensitivity in adaptation, including of developing technical papers and toolkits, conducting training and outreach and applying overall gender considerations in their work. The PCCB has been mandated, in managing and overseeing its workplan, to take into consideration cross‐cutting issues such as gender‐responsiveness, human rights and indigenous peoples’ knowledge. Additionally, all constituted bodies are requested, under the “Enhanced Lima work programme on gender and its gender action plan” (decision 3/CP.25), to continue to include in their regular reports information on progress towards integrating a gender perspective into their processes.

Many organizations, regional centres and networks also carry out gender and adaptation related activities, some of which in collaboration with the AC and the LEG. For instance, in 2019 the AC and the LEG worked together with the NAP Global Network, with input from other organizations, in developing a Toolkit for Gender responsive process to formulate and implement NAPs.

Objective

Within the context of the constituted bodies days of the PCCB capacity-building hub, the event will bring together the AC, the LEG, the PCCB and all other constituted bodies to discuss ways to further strengthen gender sensitivity in adaptation under the Convention and the Paris Agreement.

Specifically, the event will consider the following:

  • Opportunities and challenges in integrating gender considerations in adaptation planning and implementation;
  • Experience of the bodies in integrating gender considerations in their workplans;
  • Ways to enhance coordination in gender and adaptation related activities;
