Item 16 of the draft provisional agenda:
Cooperation with other international organizations

Information event by the SBSTA Chair
Saturday, 11 June 2022 |  13:30 – 15:00 CEST | Bangkok room

Introduction

The collaborative activities undertaken by the UNFCCC secretariat, United Nations entities and other international organizations for enhancing countries’ efforts to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change and reduce greenhouse gases emissions, also contribute to the wider multilateral action on sustainable development.
Such engagement ensures synergetic delivery of support and access to services and information of relevant entities on all fronts and help countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals in a coherent and collaborative way.
In recognition of this important year in which the three Rio Conventions have their COPs, the focus of the event will be on synergies among the Rio Conventions, as well as considerations on how best support the implementation at the national level of the Paris Agreement.
The Glasgow Climate Pact recognizes “the interlinked global crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, and the critical role of protecting, conserving and restoring nature and ecosystems in delivering benefits for climate adaptation and mitigation, while ensuring social and environmental safeguards”.
The collaboration among the three Rio conventions set an example in this regard. The Rio Conventions share a concern for many of the same environmental and sustainable development issues and operate within the same ecosystems. Addressing climate change contributes to minimize rates of desertification and biodiversity loss. The introduction of renewable energy technologies reduce pressure on land and forest biodiversity by providing an alternative to unsustainable biomass fuels. Combating deforestation reduces net carbon dioxide emissions, land degradation, and the loss of biodiversity.

Objectives

  • Provide an overview of UN Climate Change cooperation with UN and other international organizations since May 2021 (FCCC/SBSTA/2022/INF.1)
  • Highlight interlinkages between the three Rio Conventions and contribution of the inter-agency cooperative activities to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
