Background

In Glasgow, Parties to the Paris Agreement adopted guidance needed to operationalize the enhanced transparency framework (ETF). As the UNFCCC process moves towards implementation, Parties are urged now to swiftly make the necessary preparations for ensuring timely reporting under the ETF. Promoting universal participation in the ETF is essential to get Parties started on this journey, recognizing – beyond the key role of countries – that everyone has an important role to play in ensuring the success of the ETF and the Paris Agreement. To facilitate universal participation in the ETF and transition from the MRV, political momentum is needed to mobilize all necessary resources and support, to generate political buy-in and enhance the visibility of transparency, recognizing its fundamental role in facilitating more ambitious climate actions and support within the Paris Agreement.

Event description

As part of "Together4Transparency" at COP27, this side event will focus on gathering diverse perspectives, from a variety of Party and non-Party stakeholders, on the importance of climate transparency and data in different sectors and from different angles, with a view to showcasing the central role of transparency in driving enhanced ambition. It will also explore further opportunities to engage and unite Parties, support organizations, businesses, NGOs and other stakeholders sharing a common interest in implementing the ETF, as a key component of the Paris Agreement.
