Background

Climate change is not only an environmental challenge but also a profound development issue that affects nearly all the 17 SDGs. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and changes in precipitation patterns exacerbate poverty, hunger, inequality, and global health issues while destabilizing ecosystems and economies. As a result, addressing climate change through mitigation actions is inextricably linked to achieving sustainable development goals such as ending poverty (SDG 1) and promoting good health and well-being (SDG 3), amongst others.

Despite the deep interconnections between climate action and the broader SDG framework, progress can often be fragmented. Many countries have struggled to implement policies that simultaneously advance climate resilience and promote sustainable development. This limits the efficiency of national and international responses and poses a significant challenge to achieving the 2030 Agenda. This event seeks to bridge these gaps by promoting a unified approach that integrates climate action with impact assessments, ensuring policies are both environmentally sustainable and socially equitable.

As the world faces an ever-narrowing window of opportunity to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change, the need for integrated, cross-sectoral approaches has never been greater. The event aims to provide a platform for showcasing how aligning climate action with the SDGs can drive transformative change. By ensuring that climate initiatives are assessed for their broader social, economic, and environmental impacts, decision-makers can craft policies that benefit both people and the planet, accelerating progress toward a sustainable, resilient future for all.

Context and Objective

COP 29 presents a crucial opportunity for governments, civil society, the private sector, and multilateral organizations to accelerate global efforts in combating climate change. At this pivotal juncture, it is imperative to ensure that climate actions align with broader sustainable development objectives. This event, “Climate Actions and Impact Assessment: A Unified Approach to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, organized by the Katowice Committee of Experts on the Impacts of the Implementation of Response Measures (KCI), will explore how climate policies and their impact assessments can also assist countries in achieving their Sustainable Development objectives. The event will also see the launch of a case study to be developed by the KCI in collaboration with the European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST) and explore how the case study can provide insights on the nexus between climate action and the sustainable development goals.
