Background

This session is organized by UNU-EHS along with partners. It is led by the VARMAP Division of UNU-EHS which conducts policy-oriented research on systemic risks and pathways to sustainability in the context of climate change. Its vision is to provide actionable knowledge for climate-resilient futures. We have a strong track record in developing and applying conceptual frameworks to understand the complex nature of risks. VARMAP explores opportunities for risk reduction and examines diverse adaptation options and pathways towards sustainability and resilient societies. Supporting informed decision-making by digital means and ensuring an inclusive and just digitalization is of growing importance in VARMAP’s work.

Objectives

  • Illustration of how adaptation planning can be realized at scale by looking at real-live implementation cases and how the requisite capacity was built
  • “Whole-of-society" approach: through scenario-based simulation providing a personalized experience to participants of what leverage do the frontier technologies present for transforming climate adaptation in their context

The event will enable participants to articulate their specific needs in capacity-building and AI-driven tools, offering a platform to spotlight ongoing efforts, existing gaps and future avenues to more achievable climate action in a culture of shared learning and interdisciplinary exchange.

Highlighting the importance of synergies and the collaborative nature of this event, the following outputs and gains are being expected:

  1. Insights into a diversity of projects from across the globe that employ frontier technologies to enhance transformative adaptation, and key learnings from UNU AI Expert Conference
  2. Modular understanding of the means of implementation for leveraging AI for climate adaptation (matchmaking of ideas, solutions, and people)
  3. Enhanced collaboration and networking, leading to potential partnerships and entrepreneurship empowerment
