Background

The convergence of advanced technologies is redefining how climate policy decisions are shaped, enabling more responsive and data-informed assessments of socio-economic and environmental impacts. The event convenes experts to explore how these technological developments are enhancing the precision and agility of policy analysis and what challenges can be predicted. A key enabler of this transformation is the advancement of user interfaces and experience design, which are making complex modelling tools—such as computable general equilibrium models and integrated assessment frameworks—more accessible and usable by a wider range of stakeholders. These interfaces simplify interact with sophisticated systems, allowing policymakers to visualize scenarios, test assumptions, and interpret results without deep technical expertise. At the same time, AI is accelerating data processing while raising new considerations for data security, integrity, and ethical deployment. This is increasing the need of building secure, interoperable, and scalable platforms that support responsible innovation. This event explores how the convergence of AI, emerging technologies, and interface design is driving a new era of inclusive, evidence-based, and transparent climate policy assessment.

Implementation of response measures (Climate change mitigation policies) can have numerous impacts which could be positive or negative, so identifying and addressing them is fundamental to contribute to the global mitigation goal while leaving no one behind. To understand potential impacts, comprehensive impact assessments should be undertaken covering various social, economic, and environmental dimensions.

Objective of the event

Building on the KCI publication Impacts of emerging industries and businesses, which explored the emerging technology of Artificial Intelligence by assessing its impacts, the event will feature the launch of a user-friendly modelling interface developed by the UNFCCC. This launch will set the stage for a panel discussion on the role of AI and technological advancements in strengthening climate policy impact assessments. The event will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to share experiences, knowledge, and emerging practices in this area.

Agenda

Moderator: William Agyemang-Bonsu, AB-Hydrogen Ghana Ltd

Format: Panel discussion

Session 1: Opening

Welcome and opening remarks by the moderator. The moderator will also brief participants on basic housekeeping rules.

Session 2: Launch of CPIA-GEM interface

The session will feature the launch of the CPIA-GEM (Climate Policy Impact Assessment – General Equilibrium Model) user interface, including an introduction on its main features and a brief demonstration video. The launch will be officiated by Angélica Romero, a member of the Katowice Committee of Experts on the Impacts of the Implementation of Response Measures (KCI). This launch will serve as a starting point for discussion on the role of accessible modelling tools in supporting inclusive, evidence-based, and transparent climate policy assessments.

Session 3: Panel discussion

This session will see sharing of experience, knowledge and work on how AI and technological advancements can support impact assessments and evidence-based decision-making.

Speakers

  1. Angélica Romero, KCI member
  2. Pradeep Jain, Principal Technology Architect at Discover
  3. Dr. Lindsay Shutes, Consultant Economist at Elevate Economics
  4. Dr. Urmila Jha-Thakur, Impact Assessment Expert from the University of Liverpool
  5. Eng. Asya Alshehhi, Climate Technology Negotiator of United Arab Emirate
Session 4: Open dialogue

The floor will be opened for any additional comments, insights, and experiences from the participants. This will also serve as a Q&A session.

Session 5: Closing

The moderator will summarize key learnings and close the event.
