Summary

The RCC MENA & South Asia, in collaboration with the UNFCCC Secretariat, successfully conducted a capacity-building session focused on Article 6.8 of the Paris Agreement. The session targeted the Article 6.8 national focal point (NFP) of Sri Lanka along with other national stakeholders, aiming to strengthen understanding and readiness around non-market approaches (NMAs).

The session featured a detailed webinar presentation, offering an overview of Article 6.8, the GCNMA Work Programme, and the functionalities of the NMA Platform. It also facilitated an exploration of potential non-market approaches relevant to Sri Lanka. The content and relevance of the session were well received by the NFP, who expressed appreciation and acknowledged the potential for integrating Article 6.8 linkages into Sri Lanka’s upcoming Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) submission.

Way Forward

RCC MENA & South Asia, with continued support from the UNFCCC Bonn team, will work with Sri Lanka to analyze existing national programs and policies that align with NMA principles, while also identifying key sectors and themes—such as adaptation, sustainable energy; that would benefit from NMA engagement. These efforts are intended to help Sri Lanka strategically leverage Article 6.8 to enhance sustainable development and climate resilience.
