Summary outcome

The AC closed its considerations of the technical paper and requested the secretariat to release it as a knowledge product, including the additions made during AC20, to be made available before COP26.  

The recommendations were discussed under item 10 Report of the Adaptation Committee. 

5. (b) Adaptation Communications: Draft supplementary guidance for voluntary use by Parties in communicating adaptation information

Summary outcome

The AC considered the current interim version of the draft supplementary guidance and provided further guidance on how to develop it further, based on the feedback received at AC 20 and since the webinar.  

It further agreed to share the current version with the IPCC the week after AC 20, along with an agreed set of questions on expected input from IPCC.  

The AC will consider inter-sessionally a roadmap for further engagement, including an expert workshop involving the IPCC and other stakeholders, including vulnerable groups. 

5. (c) Methodologies for assessing adaptation needs

Summary outcome

The AC took note of the analysis of its inventory of methodologies for assessing adaptation needs and requested its issue leads and the secretariat to prepare a first draft of the mandated technical paper for consideration at its 21st meeting.  

It requested the issue leads and the secretariat to initiate the development of typologies of the methodologies as deemed useful for the further continuation of the work.  

It agreed to share an early draft with the IPCC and other constituted bodies for their feedback, as possible

The AC provided further guidance on the draft outline of the report and requested the secretariat to prepare a first draft for consideration at AC 21.

Summary of the AC-LEG joint working group's first meeting.

Summary outcome

The AC welcomed the report of the joint AC-LEG working group working group, in collaboration with the SCF.  

It endorsed the next steps proposed in the report and invited the joint working group to regularly report on the progress made.  

5. (f)  Input to the Global Stocktake

AC20/INFO/5F: Synthesis report on the information identified in paragraph 36 of decision 19/CMA.1. Outline and possible ways to engage other bodies and Parties

Summary outcome

The AC agreed on the outline of the synthesis report with the additional suggestions discussed at AC20 and requested the secretariat to prepare a first draft by mid-December, under the guidance of the Co-Chairs and the issue leads, for consideration inter-sessionally. 

It requested its Co-Chairs to continue liaising with other constituted bodies to ensure complementarity of efforts in the development of the various synthesis reports. It invited all bodies to share their respective outlines when available and agreed to organize a webinar in early February 2022 to collect further views and inputs. 

6. Technical support and guidance to the Parties on adaptation action

7. Technical support and guidance to the Parties on means of implementation

7. (b) Technologies for adaptation

AC20/TP/7B: Draft Technical paper: Priorities and needs: technologies for adaptation in agriculture, water resources and coastal zones; including experiences in stakeholder engagement and regulatory issues pertaining to the development, transfer and uptake of technologies in those sectors

Presentation of this agenda item

Summary outcome

The AC provided initial feedback on the first draft of the technical paper. It requested the secretariat to take into account the comments received, and to engage with the Technology Executive Committee (TEC), Advisory Board of the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), Nairobi Work Programme (NWP), Standing Committee on Finance (SCF) and members of the AC NAP Task Force to refine the paper for further consideration at AC 21.

7. (c) Navigating the landscape of support for the process to formulate and implement NAPs

 

Summary outcome

The AC took note of the secretariat’s demonstration of progress made on the development of the interactive online resource. It provided further guidance for its implementation and requested the secretariat to further develop it, taking into account the guidance received from the AC and future guidance from NAP Taskforce. It agreed that a printable version will also be useful and that both products should be periodically updated.

7. (d) Input to the Standing Committee on Finance for the preparation of the draft decisions on guidance to the operating entities of the Financial Mechanism  

Summary outcome

Keeping in mind the exchange at AC20, the AC members are invited to include further comments in the draft during the week following AC20.  After that, the issue leads and the co-chairs will consolidate the comments and prepare a proposal for the AC's consideration, and subsequent submission to the SCF by 9th October 2021.

9. Flexible workplan of the Adaptation Committee for 2022-2024

AC20/WP/9: Flexible workplan of the Adaptation Committee for the years 2022-2024

Summary outcome

The AC adopted its draft flexible workplan for the years 2022-2024 with the changes made at AC 20.  

It further requested the secretariat to include it as an annex to the AC’s 2021 report to the COP.

10. Report of the Adaptation Committee to the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties

 

Summary outcome

The AC agreed on recommendations to the CMA on its considerations of approaches to reviewing the overall progress made in achieving the Global Goal on Adaptation. It also agreed on a chapeau for more recommendations that will address the other topics on the AC’s workplan from 2020 and 2021 and requested the secretariat to share introductory paragraphs for the other remaining outputs on Monday, 13th  September 2021. 

The AC considered the draft report and requested the secretariat to finalize it by including the comments and guidance received at AC20. The secretariat will update the report with the outcomes of the considerations at AC20 and it will share the finalized draft for review and approval by the AC shortly after AC20, taking note of the short time frame left for translation into the 6 UN languages in time for the COP.

11. Organization of inter-sessional work

The AC updated its list of nominees to working groups and their respective issue lead.

12. Dates for future meetings

The AC agreed to hold its 21st meeting from Monday to Thursday, 28-31 March 2022.

13. Any other matters

The AC expressed interest in conducting an event at COP26, if possible.
