Introduction
As countries prepare to engage with the mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat, together with its partners, has been actively supporting Parties through a range of capacity building initiatives. These initiatives aim to strengthen both functional and technical readiness, enabling effective engagement in cooperative mechanisms.
During the 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB 62) in Bonn, the UNFCCC Article 6 Capacity Building Unit organized a side event titled "Shifting Gears: Enhancing National Capacities for Engagement with Article 6." The event was hosted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN), United Nations Environment Programme - Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC), UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centre (RCC) Latin America, and the Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP).
This session showcased the capacity building initiatives of these organizations in the context of Article 6 at both global and regional levels, and explored engagement opportunities to support countries' in enhancing their readiness to effectively engage with Article 6.
Specific Objectives
- Deepen participants’ understanding of the existing capacity building initiatives and strategic engagement opportunities under Article 6 mechanisms.
- Highlight key tools, resources, and support programs for market readiness and project development.
- Map opportunities and capacity building initiatives of the participating entities across different regions and countries
