Upcoming additional Technical Workshop to facilitate the design of gender action plan activities – 5–6 September 2025, Addis Ababa
The Technical Workshop to facilitate the development of activities under the new gender action plan will now take place on 5 and6 September 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (instead of 6 and 7 September) as a part of climate week.
This workshop follows the discussions at SB 62 (available here) and is an important milestone ahead of SBI 63.
Background and mandate
Decision 7/CP. 29 extended the enhanced Lima work programme on gender (LWPG) for a period of ten years. It requested the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) to initiate the development of a new gender action plan (GAP) at its sixty-second session (SBI 62).
At SBI 62, the SBI initiated the development of a new GAP considering the inputs to and outcome of the review of the enhanced Lima work programme on gender and its GAP in 2024[1] and the discussions at the in-session technical workshop to facilitate the design of GAP activities held at SBI 62.[2] The SBI agreed to continue consideration of this matter at its next session on the basis of the informal note prepared by the co-facilitators for this agenda item at SBI 62[3] with a view to recommending a draft decision on the new gender action plan for consideration and adoption by the Conference of the Parties at its thirtieth session (COP 30, in November 2025).
Pursuant to decision 7/CP. 29[4] and the conclusions adopted under the gender and climate change agenda item at SBI 62 (FCCC/SBI/2025/L.3)[5], an additional technical workshop will be held in conjunction with the Second Climate Week.
Objective
In this workshop, participants will engage in interactive and participatory discussions to facilitate the design of gender action plan activities based on the discussions at SBI 62, and informed by the informal note by the co-facilitators, with a view to informing the development of the new GAP. Identifying opportunities to improve the proposed deliverables developed at SBI 62 should be a focus.
Methodology
The secretariat has prepared supporting documents, based on the informal note by co-facilitators and the synthesis report mentioned above and considering the submissions received in response to the call for submissions made by COP 29 (Decision 7/CP.29, para. 15). These documents, available at the workshop webpage, will support Parties and observers during discussions.
Presentations made by the secretariat will be based on the abovementioned supporting documents.
Preparing for the workshop
In preparation for the workshop, participants are invited to consider the background documents produced for this workshop, which will be uploaded to the workshop webpage as they become available.
All participants are invited to consider the abovementioned synthesis report, along with the analysis summary document synthesizing implementation efforts reported in submissions.
All participants are invited to familiarize themselves with the submissions received, which are available on the UNFCCC Submission portal (use the search term “gender” and look into the submissions under “Session Name: SB 62”).
All participants are invited to actively engage in the group work.
Expected Outcome
Participants have jointly reflected on facilitating the design of gender action plan activities, with a view to informing the development of the new GAP, including identifying opportunities to improve the proposed deliverables developed at SBI 62.
Participants have workshopped activity design, considering inter alia, activity description, responsibilities, timelines, deliverables/outputs, level of implementation, sequencing, possible linkages and complementarities.
Expected Output
The recordings of plenary sessions, as well as documentation of the material used in group discussions and report backs, and an informal summary, will be captured, and published on the workshop webpage.
We kindly ask that participants complete their registration and arrive at the meeting room (meeting room 6) as early as possible to avoid delays.
