AGYLE América Latina

AGYLE Latin America brings the voice of youth to the climate negotiations and supports youth in climate action around the world.

The Academy for Global Youth Leadership Empowerment Latin America launches in June 2022 with a goal to empower new generations to be part of global climate action. AGYLE Latin America opens space for knowledge sharing, partnership building and education for Latin American youth. AGYLE Latin America aims to build capacity and engage youth in the climate change agenda at national, regional and global levels and bring their voice to the climate talks.

The work of AGYLE Latin America will move forward in three areas:

  • AGYLE Knowledge Hub  – COMING SOON!  An online platform to share Spanish and English resources to create synergies among initiatives and empower young people in Latin America
  • Capacity-building Support  –  Enable youth involvement in climate change negotiations at the international level, building on successes like the 2018/19 collaboration with the Ministry of Environment of Panama that built skills and knowledge for 59 young people to launch the Youth and Climate Change of Panama NGO
  • Participation and Representation    Promote and strengthen representation of regional youth in formal spaces such as the annual COP conference, LAC Climate Week, Conference of Youth (COY) and most recently, parliamentary dialogues hosted by ParlAmericas
  • Internship Mentoring for Climate Change – Explore opportunities for youth internships and research openings to promote one-to-one learning and hands-on experience

Our network is made up of regional organizations and institutions committed to capacity building and youth engagement in the global climate agenda. AGYLE collaborates with ACE focal points in Latin America and RCC Panama strategic partners such as UNEP, UNDP, UNICEF LACRO, ParlAmericas, YOUNGO and la Organización de Jóvenes y Cambio Climático de Panama and Sustenta Honduras, and more.

AGYLE Latin America offers several opportunities for collaborative action. Stakeholders can contribute in various ways –  content development, online courses, hosting and management of online course platforms, course delivery and other activities. Email RCCPanama@unfccc.int to learn more.

The concept of youth training on climate change is not new. initiatives involved in youth engagement open opportunities to gain insights and collaborate to create a platform that brings together youth stakeholders in the UNFCCC process. In so doing, AGYLE can leverage and strengthen youth connections while avoiding duplication of effort.

AGYLE builds on and adds value to existing regional youth engagement frameworks, while empowering youth to participate in and promote the climate action agenda by engaging with UN Climate Change processes at the global, regional and inter-governmental levels.

Objectives

AGYLE aims to build the capacity of youth from diverse stakeholder groups in key regions by:

  1. Explaining key elements of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the role of climate action in the context of sustainable development
  2. Articulating interrelationships and interdependencies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in five critical dimensions of sustainable development – People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership
  3. Identifying best practices to ensure coherence and reinforcement of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
  4. Explaining tools and instruments to mainstream sustainable development and climate action into national development policies and planning

Key Outcomes

Success for the AGYLE program can be realized in many ways:

  • Train youth from different stakeholder groups on key aspects of climate change
  • Improve youth support for global climate action efforts
  • Strengthen capacity of youth negotiators to participate in the UNFCCC process
  • Develop a series of training modules in person and online to support Paris Agreement implementation

AGYLE Courses

AGYLE has developed a comprehensive curriculum to support youth that are eager to be more effectively engaged in climate change negotiation processes and green entrepreneurship. Courses run for 23 weeks and provide a comprehensive conceptual foundation for young people to:

  • Effectively engage in climate policy negotiations and related legal processes
  • Understand how climate action is financed
  • Translate climate solutions into sustainable enterprises

Youth who are interested in joining an AGYLE course are encouraged to contact the AGYLE team by email.

The Internship Programme

AGYLE supports an internship programme in line with the initiative's objective of tapping into the intrinsic abilities of young people’s energy, creativity, skills and talents to drive ambitious climate action while unlocking opportunities. The programme will equip young people with the  knowledge, know-how, skills and competences required to respond to the challenges of today and tomorrow.

The programme complements the conceptual knowledge that students  gained through AGYLE courses with a practical work experience, further strengthening young people’s capacity for climate policy and green entrepreneurship.

University students who are interested in applying to the Internship Programme are encouraged to contact the AGYLE team by email.

In 2021, the UK COP26 Presidency held the first-ever Youth Pre-COP in Milan ahead of COP26 in Glasgow. Over 400 young delegates were selected to participate in the event. UN Climate Change Regional Collaboration Centres partnered with UNICEF and the SDG Action Campaign to develop a platform and tailor AGYLE courses targeting the skills of the young delegates.
