Background:

The Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building technical capacity for high-quality greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) worldwide. Through training, professional certification, and applied research, GHGMI works to strengthen the skills and credibility of practitioners who support climate transparency, including the planning and implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).

Many countries and organizations continue to face gaps in technical capacity for high-quality GHG reporting and verification, including limited access to professional development and training support, inconsistent application of international methodologies, and a shortage of practitioners with verified competencies. These gaps affect the credibility and transparency of emissions data and analytics, which are critical for accessing climate finance and supporting NDC and NAP implementation.

This session brings together GHGMI and the Institute of Sustainability and Carbon Footprint (ISCF) to address these gaps from two complementary angles: building core GHG MRV competencies and professional pathways (GHGMI) and applying independent verification and assurance to strengthen the credibility of GHG and sustainability disclosures (ISCF). The collaboration is intended to broaden the session's relevance to a global audience while the session itself will be delivered in English.

Objectives:

• Identify key competencies and standards required for high-quality GHG MRV.

• Describe common challenges and practical approaches to building GHG MRV capacity.

• Introduce the role of independent verification and assurance in strengthening the credibility of GHG and sustainability disclosures.

• Explore professional pathways, including the EP®(GHG) designation, for structuring skills development and demonstrating alignment with international standards.

• Engage participants with peers to exchange experiences and identify opportunities for collaboration.
