Informal round table on NDC ambition

Event organized by the President of COP 25

This informal round table is organized by the President of COP 25 with the objective of discussing aggregate efforts to address climate change and share views on how, in the run up to 2020, the gap in ambition could be bridged through new or updated NDCs.  The event will be organized as an open discussion focusing in opportunities to achieve a higher level of ambition that is compatible with economic and social development.

  • Raise awareness on the need to enhance ambition and identify avenues to do so;
  • Provide a space in the context of the COP to advance the understanding of ambition captured in NDCs and what would it mean to enhance it, including by allowing to exchange on Parties positions in this regard;
  • Identify concrete opportunities to achieve a higher level of ambition that is compatible with economic and social development;
  • Provide a link between the UNFCCC process and the Climate Action Summit, including with the Climate Ambition Alliance;

1. Opening remarks (COP Presidency)

2. Understanding ambition in NDCs

  • What does ambition in NDCs mean (both in aggregate and the individual level) and what can Parties and other actors do to enhance it?
  • What should be our aim next year as regards ambition in NDCs?

3. Challenges and links to sustainable development

  • What are the main opportunities and challenges to enhance ambition and how do they link to the broader agenda of sustainable development?

4. Closing remarks (COP Presidency)

 

The round table is open to all interested Parties and observer States as well as to admitted observer organizations.

In view of to space constrains, we encourage participation at the level of heads of delegation, to be accompanied by not more than one person (1+1). For admitted non-governmental organizations (NGOs), participation will be limited to two representatives by constituencies of admitted non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

With a view to making adequate arrangements for this event, interested Parties are cordially invited to inform the secretariat, via their national focal point, of the names of the delegates who will attend this round table. Parties are kindly requested to make this information available to the Ambition logistics team, ambition.COP25@unfccc.int, no later than Monday, 2 December 2019.
