Background
Climate change impacts in the Asia Pacific are becoming increasingly evident, making the region one of the most vulnerable regions in the world when it comes to climate change. Asia and the Pacific region is home to over half of the world's youth, comprising a staggering 1.7 billion children and young people in total. It is noteworthy that youth, by virtue of their age, represent one of the most vulnerable segments of society in the face of the ongoing climate crisis.
In order to achieve the 2030 Agenda, it becomes paramount to ensure that the youth, with their creativity, vigor, and energy, are granted the opportunity to actively partake as equal collaborators in all stages of the development endeavors, including policy and decision-making processes. It is recognized that engaging youth in intergovernmental policy-making processes leads to more inclusive and sustainable policies. However, young people’s participation in the international policy forums often remains under-represented and their concerns are often not taken seriously. The reasons include systematic exclusion of youth in national level processes and stakeholder consultations, perceived lack of technical skills and limited financial support to engage in climate policy discourse.
Objectives
- Elevate young people’s capabilities, enabling them to actively participate in climate policy making processes.
- Foster inclusive policy development in co-creating effective solutions for climate challenges.
- Explore avenues of collaboration to harness young people’s creativity and innovation to transform climate policies.
