Why participate?

Climate action becomes more urgent with each passing day and so does the need for the support and commitment of the whole of society. For this reason, the UN Climate Change secretariat, in collaboration with partners around the world, is launching a series of virtual events where different actors will share their experiences and inspire others on their way to sustainability and climate neutral or net-zero emissions targets.

What will be presented?

We know that the path to climate neutrality begins with estimating greenhouse gas emissions, but what do "climate neutrality" and "net-zero emissions mean"? The specialists of Climate Neutral Now and participants in the initiative will address these and other questions. They will also present the enhanced version of the initiative, including how it can support your organization to move towards climate neutrality and net-zero emissions.

How will it work?

In our two-panel discussions you will hear how we can all work towards climate neutrality and net-zero goals.

From the private sector, we will hear about the activities of companies in different regions, commitments to move towards net-zero emissions, and the benefits of doing so as well as the challenges that may be encountered along the road.

We will also hear from representatives of the public sector, as they will discuss what policies are necessary to support private sector organizations to achieve more sustainable practices.

The Role of Carbon Markets in Supporting Sustainable Development and Climate Action – Experience from Germany

Conversation among representatives from national governments, NGOs, private sector and the UNFCCC secretariat to raise awareness about and promote the benefits of carbon market mechanisms for sustainable development through the presentation of the experiences of different actors/stakeholders involved in voluntary carbon markets.

Objective

To encourage private sector companies to participate in the voluntary carbon markets by sharing the rationale and benefits that participants in Climate Neutral Now and the Development and Climate Alliance have identified.

Background

The voluntary carbon markets have an enormous untapped potential to support climate action and sustainable development. As the climate emergency accelerates, using this tool, in addition to others, becomes even more urgent.

Climate action by the private sector is indispensable. Even when the response by the private sector has been growing in recent years, more can and must be done. The business case for climate action is clear: business cannot succeed in a society that fails. In addition, action on climate builds brand value, trust of customers, employee engagement and many other benefits for the company.

The voluntary carbon markets represent an opportunity for companies to do more on the response to climate change, to engage with their stakeholders, to strenghten their climate action/sustainability strategies, and to show leadership.
