Background

As mandated by paragraph 8(b) of decision  1/CP.10, the expert meeting on adaptation for SIDS  is organized under the guidance of the chair of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation to facilitate information exchange and integrated assessments to assist Parties in identifying specific adaptation needs and concerns.  The expert meeting will be held in two parts.

Part I for Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean SIDS
5 to 7 February 2007, Kingston, Jamaica

The meeting was hosted by the Jamaican Ministry of Local Government and Environment and was organized by the UNFCCC in collaboration with the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Environment Programme. Participants included experts from SIDS, developed countries, international organizations and non-governmental organizations.

Part II for Pacific and Indian Ocean SIDS
26 to 28 February 2007, Rarotonga, Cook Islands

An expert meeting on adaptation for the small island developing states (SIDS) of the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions was held in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands. The meeting, organised by the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and hosted by the Environment Service of the Cook Islands, provided participating experts with the opportunity to exchange information on assessing the impacts of climate change, as well as their countries’ vulnerabilities to these impacts.
