The Global District Energy Accelerator is part of the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative and aims at accelerating the transition to low-carbon, climate resilient district energy systems. The initiative will globally recognize and replicate a district energy approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions change while delivering environmental and socio-economic benefits. Continuing, in-kind, expert support of the Initiative’s partners to undertake assessments and feasibilities would result in more capacity building and technical assistance being made available to countries/cities.
The Global District Energy in Cities Initiative was launched at the 2014 New York Climate Summit, as part of SE4ALL’s Global Energy Efficiency Accelerator Platform, with 22 countries and cities that had indicated interest in joining the initiative.
Long term targets:
- A recognized and replicable district energy approach to reducing GHG climate change while delivering environmental and socio-economic benefits.
- In-kind expert support to undertake assessments and feasibilities, being made available to countries and cities.
Means:
- Increasing awareness about the benefits of DES
- Strengthening the capacity of national and/or sub-national constituencies to adopt the necessary policy and institutional frameworks
- Encouraging the private sector and investors to finance systems.
