Background
National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) are the primary instrument for adaptation and resilience building under the UNFCCC. They are a lifeline for a world on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Through clear priorities and coordinated action, NAPs guide countries in protecting lives, livelihoods, and vital ecosystems from escalating climate impacts. By unlocking and channeling adaptation finance where it is needed most, they turn ambition into action and planning into protection. When fully implemented, NAPs can accelerate progress towards achieving the Global Goal on Adaptation, thereby helping nations to strengthen resilience, empower communities, and safeguard our shared home, the planet.
The SBI invited LDCs to submit their NAPs to the UNFCCC at its 58th session. In addition, the first global stocktake, among its outcomes, called on Parties that have not yet done so to have in place their national adaptation plans, policies and planning processes by 2025 and to have progressed in implementing them by 2030.
An increasing number of countries, both developing and developed, have completed and submitted their NAPs, demonstrating growing momentum and leadership in advancing adaptation planning and implementation. These efforts collectively mark an important step toward strengthening global resilience and contribute directly to the achievement of the Global Goal on Adaptation.
Objectives
The event will offer an opportunity to LDCs that submitted a NAP and other Parties that have completed and shared their NAPs since COP 29 (November 2024), to celebrate this collective achievement and exchange reflections on advancing national adaptation efforts. Specifically, the event will:
- Celebrate countries that have submitted their NAPs since COP 29, recognizing their leadership and contribution to advancing global adaptation efforts.
- Highlight the central role of NAPs in driving coordinated and measurable progress on adaptation, consistent with the global goal on adaptation.
- Encourage the transition from planning to implementation
- Strengthen collaboration among Parties, financial and technical institutions, and partners to ensure that NAPs lead to tangible outcomes on the ground.
Participants
Ministers from countries that have completed and shared their NAPs since COP 29, representatives of the operating entities of the UNFCCC Financial Mechanism, United Nations agencies and other international organizations, and other strategic partners supporting adaptation planning and implementation.
