The role of local government in ensuring the aims of the Kyoto Protocol, as well as the UNFCCC. Case Study: City of Cape Town, South Africa
As the sphere of governance closest to communities, local government is well placed to respond to the implementation of the aims UNFCCC and its Kyoto Protocol, ito a decreasing ghg emissions and responding to the harmful impacts of climate change, in a manner that is sustainable. In South Africa, as is the case with most developing countries, this response is primarily from a developmental perspective and secondarily from a climate change perspective.
