The Conference of the Parties, by its decision 1/CP.21, paragraph 20, decided to convene a facilitative dialogue among Parties in 2018 to take stock of the collective efforts of Parties in relation to progress towards the long-term goal referred to in Article 4, paragraph 1, of the Agreement and to inform the preparation of nationally determined contributions pursuant to Article 4, paragraph 8, of the Agreement.

At COP23, the Talanoa Dialogue was launched, to start in January 2018. The approach to the dialogue is contained in annex II to decision 1/CP.23.

The opening meeting of the Talanoa Dialogue will take place on May 2, 2018. The Presidencies intend to provide an overview of inputs submitted to the Talanoa Dialogue Platform and inform participants of the framework and guidelines for participation in the dialogue.

Following the introduction by the Presidencies, groups of Parties and observer constituencies will be invited to share their views on what they expect from the Talanoa Dialogue. After these interventions, four panelists will be invited by the Presidencies to share stories relevant to the key questions of the Talanoa Dialogue. These stories will illustrate the Talanoa story telling and will also provide some initial key messages of where we are, where do we want to go and how we get there. Parties and non-Party stakeholders may ask any questions of clarification or share further reflections on the process.

This meeting will be conducted in accordance with established UNFCCC procedures and practice for plenary meetings.
