Background

Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) are the central pillars of countries’ climate policies, serving as the backbone for raising ambition and driving climate action. They are also at the core of many climate funds’ country-driven approaches for programming mitigation and adaptation projects. Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII), under UNU-EHS, supports countries integrating climate and disaster risk finance and insurance (CDRFI) into their NAPs and NDCs. Building on MCII’s ongoing support to the countries, this session aims to strengthen collective capacity-building for scalable, financeable NDCs and NAPs.

This session brought together perspectives from climate funds, networks (i.e., NAP Global Network), governments, and civil society to explore practical, evidence-based solutions for mobilizing finance and strengthening the coherence between NDCs and NAPs. Participants engaged in peer-to-peer exchanges to build practical competencies in accessing finance, designing bankable projects, and fostering collaboration

Objectives

  • Identify gaps and opportunities in access to climate finance for implementing NDCs and NAPs.

  • Present innovative financing approaches, including insurance-based mechanisms and integrated policy frameworks, that can strengthen implementation.

  • Showcase case studies from different regions and sectors illustrating how financial strategies can be aligned with NDC and NAP priorities to deliver adaptation and mitigation outcomes.
