Background

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is a treaty-based international, inter-governmental organization dedicated to supporting and promoting strong, inclusive and sustainable economic growth in developing countries and emerging economies. One of our global operational priorities is to make communities sustainable, livable and resilient through supporting green jobs creation. In Jordan, with funding from the Korean International Cooperation Agency, GGGI and the Ministry of Environment are implementing  the "Creating Sustainable Green Jobs for Refugees and Host Communities through the Green Economy" project, which aims to establish an inclusive green employment ecosystem in Jordan for vulnerable Jordanians and refugees, ensuring that they are provided with opportunities for skill development, and enhanced access to green job opportunities. The project also includes knowledge sharing with key stakeholders within the Jordan Government, and green entrepreneurship training.

The SEEK Feminist Network is a migrant women-led organization based in The Netherlands We aim to include the perspectives, voices and knowledges of migrants and refugees into the climate change agenda as our human right. We emphasize the need for our increased participation in spaces and platforms for sharing information and mobilizing resources for capacity building initiatives that are inclusive but also responsive to needs of migrants and refugees, in particular women. Highlighting the crucial link between capacity building for climate change as Human Right is necessary to open capacity building avenues for vulnerable groups such as migrants who remain excluded due to factors such as language, legal paperwork, lack of information and resources and so on. We have extensively worked on bringing lived experiences of community to inform the solutions designed to support the affected communities and contribute to climate justice.

Objectives

  • Shared insight from the field on how refugees, women, host communities, and vulnerable people can benefit from the green economy to secure sustainable jobs and contribute to address climate change.

  • Learned from refugee-hosting country government on capacity-building needs and challenges towards accelerating the creation of green jobs opportunities.

  • Shared success stories at the nexus of climate change, green economy and refugees

  • Shared insights on challenges faced by persons and communities displaced due to effects of climate change and co-create solutions for capacity-building of communities for adaptation and preparedness for effects of climate change
