Official side events & exhibits

Official side events
Official side events are a platform for admitted observer organizations, which have limited speaking opportunities in the formal negotiations, to engage with Parties and other participants for knowledge sharing, capacity building, networking and exploring actionable options for meeting the climate challenge.

UN agencies, admitted observer organizations and those Parties that partner with observers present their work or foster discussions on key issues, often engaging the audience in a Q&A session. Side events are 90 minutes in duration. A side event slot is offered free of charge.

The official side event program for COP 22/CMP 12/CMA 1 contained over 200 events focused on major issues in the Convention process. The full schedule and the side event materials are available through the link below

As introduced at SB 44, the official side events at COP 22/CMP 12/CMA 1 were organized under the common theme "Accelerating implementation of the Paris Agreement" and were categorized under the three categories:

1. Enhancing ambition:
pre-2020 action; any issues that help increase ambition.

2. Promoting implementation:
methodologies, showcasing of climate action, global stocktake, etc.

3. Providing support to developing countries:
means of implementation, replicable tools and approaches.

Greening of side events

With a view to reinforcing the greening of the conference, the organizers of all official side events were strongly encouraged by the UNFCCC secretariat to disseminate their side event materials through electronic means only. In order to track the sustainability level of each side event, a 3-level rating was used: 'green' (electronic dissemination of materials only), 'orange' (limited number of printed materials combined with electronic dissemination) and 'red' (a lot of leftover printed materials).

Thanks to the exemplary commitment and cooperation of many side event organizers, 111 side events (559% of the total of 201) were rated green. The list of all 'green' side events can be found through the link below.

Official exhibits

Exhibits serve as a platform for observer organizations and Parties to highlight diverse climate change issues at UNFCCC conferences and provide a meeting point for participants. They cover a wide variety of topics and are loosely clustered by theme. An exhibit stand is offered free of charge.

The full list of exhibits and the exhibit materials are available through the link below.

“Touch-to-collect” technology (Poken)

Poken at SB 44

In line with the sustainability efforts for COP 22/CMP 12/CMA 1, innovative “touch-to-collect” technology (Poken) was deployed by the host country. Poken is a platform for collecting digital information and networking in a user-friendly way.

Participants could receive a personal Poken device, at no charge, at the Poken distribution counters located inside the side events and exhibits hall (Area E) and in the Moroccan Pavilion (Area D). Poken, once registered with personal login information, allowed collecting digital information from the official exhibits, the side events and the Moroccan Pavilion, as well as recent secretariat’s publications and daily reports by observer organizations.

The registration of personal login information also allowed an exchange of digital business cards among participants holding a personal Poken device. Once collected information is loaded on participants’ computer and the conference is over, Poken devices are no longer needed. Participants were invited to contribute to sustainability by recycling their Poken device on the last day.

1-Day Oasis

The 1-Day Oasis is a new format of an exhibit that could be booked by duly accredited Parties and observers on a per-day basis to showcase climate action. The 1-Day Oasis could be used for open dialogues, meeting peers, launching initiatives, campaigns, projects, presenting a new project or the outcomes of implemented ones, in addition to the conventional use as an exhibit.

It allowed having a small standing audience of up to 20 people. The sound system was not provided, as the space was about 5 meters in diameter.

For more information on the 1-Day Oasis, please contact climatechangestudio@unfccc.int.

1-Day Oasis

Pavilions, other and outside events

Besides the official side events and other events coordinated by the UNFCCC secretariat, Parties and observer organizations organized their own events relating to the climate change negotiation process within different Pavilions and outside the conference premises. Apart from these events, some NGOs held media actions or publicity activities in order to raise public awareness or to communicate with delegates during the sessions. The information on such events and activities was announced hereunder on a request basis.
