Curriculum Development
Article 6(a) (i) of the Convention suggests the promotion at the national level
and in accordance with the respective national capacities of "the development
and implementation of educational and public awareness programmes on climate change
and its effects." The "development and exchange of educational and public
awareness material on climate change change and its effects" are encouraged in
Article 6(b)(i) through cooperation in and promotion at the international level
and where appropriate using existing bodies.
Curriculum development in the Convention context
involves the integration of issues of climate change into the formal and informal
education systems. As currently provided, the options on this page address only
the formal system. Inputs are welcome to extend its usefulness to informal education
systems (i.e. extension work to agriculture, to industry/business, etc.)
The following selections have been brought together to facilitate the development
of educational programmes on climate change and its affects into the formal education
system. The linkages provided in the "classroom resources" option were selected
as they give guidance and suggest activities which help to integrate climate change
issues into school curricula. The "sample material" option directs users to actual
products developed. The latter selections are few and your inputs are welcome.
A "case studies and approaches" option was not provided for lack of available
material. However, should you wish to share your experience as a case study
or as an approach to integrating climate change issues into the formal or informal
education systems again we welcome your input. Please contact: Lisa Moreau (lmoreau@unfccc.int).
