Objective of the Special Event 

This  UNFCCC special event, convened by the co-facilitators of the 2026 Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue (“the Dialogue”), Sivendra Michael (Fiji) and Ulrik Lenaerts (Belgium), will present and discuss the key messages of the informal summary report of the Dialogue and explore how its topics and outcomes can inform relevant COP31 outcomes, and advance ocean action from ambition to implementation.

  • What could be the possible outcomes for the ocean at COP31 to elevate the ocean-climate nexus?
  • How can ocean-based climate action be strengthened under the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement process, including through the Ocean Dialogue, the Global Stocktake, and the Glasgow mandate? Do you see merit in a multi-year perspective?
  • How can MoI be enhanced to accelerate the implementation of ocean-based action in Parties current cycle of NDCs and NAPs?
