This event is part of the Global Climate Action Agenda programme at COP 31, under Axis 1: Transitioning Energy, Industry, Transport.

Background
At COP30, countries made a shared commitment through the Belém Declaration on Global Green Industrialization, recognising green industrialization as a path to growth, jobs and resilience for every economy, not only a climate obligation. The Global Green Industrialization Agenda (GGIA), to be launched during the COP31 Leaders' Summit on Green Industrialisation, is how that commitment moves into delivery. It marks a step change in multilateral cooperation: from decarbonising existing industry to building cleaner industry, clean technology manufacturing and clean products in every region, with governments, international organisations, business and delivery partners working together across sectors. It is recognised in the COP31 Presidency's Antalya Green Industrialisation Compact as the international coordination framework for green industrialisation.
The COP31 Presidency has set a global target to raise the share of final energy demand met by electricity from just over 20% today to 35% by 2035. Industry is central to reaching it, both as one of the largest users of energy and as the maker of the technologies electrification depends on. Electrifying industrial heat and processes can cut emissions and reduce exposure to fossil fuel price volatility, while growing demand for electric technologies creates opportunities to build new industries and jobs. Realising both depends on multilateral cooperation on industrial policy, investment, skills and technology.
During this COP31 Spotlight Event, governments, international agencies and industry will set out how industry is taking up electrification and what it will take to scale it up, particularly in emerging and developing economies, highlighting progress across the relevant Plans to Accelerate Solutions (PASs). The session contributes to the GCAA Axis 1 key objectives on accelerating zero and low emission technologies in hard-to-abate sectors (AG2) and on transitioning away from fossil fuels in a just, orderly and equitable manner (AG4), and to the COP31 Presidency’s Clean Energy Transition and Green Industrialization priorities.
Suggested Outcomes
- Showcase country and industry examples of electrifying industrial processes, including progress across the relevant PASs.
- Identify the industrial policy, institutional and investment conditions needed to scale up industrial electrification.
- Strengthen collaboration between governments, industry and international partners on industrial electrification, including through the COP31 Presidency's electrification coalition and the GGIA.
