Background
In 2026, LAKI focuses on the Amazon subregion, comprising Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of). The Amazon is a highly interconnected ecosystem facing significant climate-related risks, with implications for biodiversity, water resources, livelihoods and the well-being of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
Priority-setting workshop
The priority-setting workshop for the Amazon subregion will be held from 3 to 6 November 2026 in Brasília, Brazil. The workshop will be hosted by UNEP, co-organized with the UNFCCC secretariat, in partnership with the COP 30 Presidency.
The workshop will build on LAKI's established methodology while introducing a forward-looking approach to anticipate emerging adaptation knowledge and know-how needs. Its central focus is on understanding what people and communities need to know to adapt effectively to changing climate conditions, identifying where critical knowledge and know-how are missing, and exploring how new knowledge can be created or existing knowledge can be translated into forms that are relevant, usable and accessible to intended users.
The four-day workshop will bring together experts from the subregion to:
- identify and prioritize current adaptation knowledge and know-how gaps across the Amazon subregion;
- anticipate future adaptation knowledge and know-how needs under changing climate conditions through a forward-looking approach; and
- explore potential responses to the priority knowledge and know-how gaps, including relevant expertise and partnership opportunities to close the priority knowledge and know how gaps.
