Enabling Activities

CC:INFO Country Profile

Activities

While the Centre for Energy, Environment and Engineering is actively undertaking studies in climate change, other institutions have also been carrying out relevant complementary work relating to climate change. The activities alluded to above cover the following themes:

GHG Mitigation in Southern Africa - National Studies and Regional Collaboration

The work was successfully implemented thanks to the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) through UNEP Collaborating Centre on Energy and Environment. The study focused on the economy, overview of the institutional set up for national planning related to environment, organisation overview for the existing climate change activities, review of existing studies and plans on climate change, energy supply and demand, and environmental issues in major sectors of the economy and mitigation.

Adaptation and Vulnerability

This study is being carried out under the auspices of the Environmental Council of Zambia with financial support from the United States Country Study Programme(US CSP). A series of models for predicting adaptation and vulnerability scenarios have been adopted and tested. A unique feature of this project is capacity building with particular emphasis on modelling.

Methodological development, National Mitigation Analysis and Institutional Capacity Building

This project is planned to run for a period of 3 years. The aim of the project is to develop methodology for carrying out greenhouse gases emission studies and analysis and also to develop capacity through interaction with cooperating institutions. The UNEP Collaborating Centre on Energy and Environment is a notable institutions with which capacity is expected to be built.

The project has three objectives:
  1. To establish and enhance national framework for developing climate change mitigation in Zambia in line with general development objectives.
  2. To establish or enhance the national capacity to comply with the requirements of the framework convention on climate change, primarily with regard to mitigation, but including enhancement of greenhouse gas inventories where necessary.
  3. To develop and test a methodological framework for subregional climate change mitigation analysis and strengthen regional awareness and responses to climate change.
