Side Events and Exhibits were originally established by the secretariat as a forum for observer organizations to highlight diverse climate change issues in a different environment from the negotiation process itself. The successful development of Side Events and Exhibits over the past years has led to a great diversity of issues presented and organizers contributing to UNFCCC sessions through this platform.
Side Events: Parties, UN and admitted observer organizations present their work or foster discussions on key issues at Side Events, often engaging the audience in a Q&A session. Previously, Side Events have been scheduled solely outside negotiation hours. Due to the high demand, the secretariat decided to increase the number of slots by scheduling Side Event throughout the day. The host Government has generously provided Side Event rooms to accommodate as many as 250 Side Events for COP 16/CMP 6. These Side Event rooms are located at Cancunmesse. Side Events are 80 - 90 minutes in duration. In order to allow for sufficient time to commute between Moon Palace and Cancunmesse, Side Events taking place at lunch time have been scheduled at 13.20 until 14.40. Other slots are 90 minutes in duration.
Exhibits: The host Government has generously provided standardized Exhibit booths for Parties, UN and admitted observer organizations to showcase their work at COP 16/CMP 6. The exhibition are includes a great variety of ca. 200 Exhibits, which are located at Cancunmesse throughout the conference.
