The twenty-fourth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 24), the fourteenth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 14), and the third part of the first session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1.3) will be held at the International Conference Centre (MCK)  and the adjacent Spodek Arena in Katowice, Poland, from 2 to 14 December 2018.

COP 24 will be convened under the Presidency of Poland.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat is working with the Government of Poland to make all necessary arrangements for the conference.

Code of Conduct to address harassment at UNFCCC conferences, meetings and events

UNFCCC conferences, meetings and events should be professional, respectful and harassment-free environments for all participants. Harassment in any form, including sexual harassment, will not be tolerated. All participants are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and appropriate manner.

The Code of Conduct is available here and contains detailed information on prohibited conduct, complaint and investigation processes as well as possible consequences in case of misbehaviour.

Disclaimer regarding events taking place outside the United Nations premises during climate change conferences

The United Nations Climate Change Secretariat publishes through its communications channels, at the request of various organizers for promotional purposes and on a courtesy basis, events taking place outside the United Nations premises during climate change conferences. These external premises are subject to national and local jurisdiction and the role of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat, in the event of an incident, will be limited to facilitate contact with national and local authorities.

Smoking is not allowed inside the conference premises. Designated smoking areas are available outside.

The high-level segment of the United Nations Climate Change Conference – December 2018 will be inaugurated during the second week of the conference. More information on the high-level segment will be provided in due course.

Side events and exhibits

Climate Action Studio

The Climate Action Studio is a platform for showcasing action by non-Party stakeholders in the UN climate change process. The studio operates during COPs and subsidiary body sessions by invitation, providing a space to highlight that action through interviews with observers admitted to the UNFCCC around specific themes linked to the negotiation process. The interviews are shared through the Climate Action Studio YouTube channel.

Delegation offices and pavilion spaces can be rented on a commercial basis. A booking system will be made available on the official COP 24 website in the second half of September. Please note that the system will be open for a period of two weeks only. Further information is available here.

Registration

Who can register

Parties to the Convention, United Nations and related organizations and agencies, media and non-profit organizations with observer status may attend the sessions of the Convention and must register accordingly. More information on options for participation is available here.

How to register

Registration for the conference is managed through the UNFCCC Online Registration System (ORS).

The notification on COP 24 to Parties and observer States, which will contain important information including on the registration times of the conference, will be sent at least two months before the opening of the conference, in accordance with the draft rules of procedure being applied.

Please note that there is no online registration system for United Nations organizations. Procedures on how to register delegations from United Nations organizations will be included in the communication to Heads of UN Agencies regarding COP 24.

Side events and exhibits

The SEORS registration platform is now closed to new COP 24 side event and exhibit applications. Applicants who successfully submitted an application by the deadline will now have until Friday 31 August 2018, 17:00 (CEST) to consolidate and merge their applications on SEORS .

Sustainable conference

Dissemination of printed information material

To reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated in connection with the conference, and with a view to further reducing paper usage and wastage, participants are asked to refrain from distributing any printed material, such as publications and information related to side events and exhibits, other meetings or future conferences. Please note that the secretariat strongly encourages the electronic dissemination of information.

In this context, please note that daily updates on the negotiations, such as the Earth Negotiations Bulletin, ECO and Third World Network, will be disseminated in electronic form only. To facilitate access, as per past practice the secretariat will include web links to these updates in the Daily Programme. The publishing organizations may wish to display a copy with QR codes at their exhibit stands.

Transportation

Katowice Airport is situated 34 km away from the city centre. Upon arrival, participants can easily reach the city centre using shuttle buses operated by PKM Katowice that can be found outside the terminal building and will drop passengers off near the main railway station (Katowice Dworzec).

Krakow Airport is located 70 km from Katowice. Upon arrival, participants can take a train from Krakow to Katowice (travel time approx. 1 hour).

Mazurkas Travel Transport offers transportation services including from/ to the airports of Katowice and Krakow, between hotels and the conference venue, to and from restaurants etc.

Virtual participation
Visas

All foreign delegates entering the Republic of Poland must have a valid passport.

Visa application process:

  • Participants requiring a visa should contact the appropriate consular authorities well in advance of the Conference to ensure sufficient time for processing. Visa applications must be submitted no more than three months prior to the planned date of entry into the Schengen area, and time must be allowed to schedule a meeting to submit the application. Depending on nationality, visas can be issued between 48 hours and 15 days after the time of application.
  • Participants should contact Polish embassies or consular authorities or, in some cases, the embassy or consular authority of another European Union State which represents Poland for the issuance of visas.
  • To facilitate the issuance of a visa and for the visa application fees to be waived, a copy of the acknowledgement letter which will be generated from the Online Registration System upon registration for the Conference must be attached to the visa application.
